Martin Hay Earthmoving operate a skip bin business for recycled material from the construction industry and manage a landfill cell for its disposal in Gundagai - a regional NSW town.
Towards the end of 2022 MH Earthmoving set out to purchase a landfill compactor to support the business operations and landfill cell.
The business did not require the largest compactor, however a compactor that would be the perfect fit for the landfill and incoming waste streams.
“I was looking for a stronger machine, because we’re compacting pretty robust stuff,” he says. “It’s all non-putrescible, meaning there’s no food or organic waste – it’s just purely C&D.
When Martin approached the market and weighed up the options between a TANA full-width drum compactor vs a less efficient 4-Wheel compactor the choice was made simple...
“What sold me on the TANA compactors is their full-width drums, as opposed to big wheels that leave a gap in the middle. From the trials we ran, we found the TANA gave us about 35 per cent better compaction – and that’s a big difference.”
The unique full-width drum designed maximizes coverage, requiring less passes and helps save on fuel burn and operator hours. “We don’t have to do as many passes to achieve the level of compaction we need,” Martin says.
“This also helps with the fuel economy of the machine – it’s probably 15 per cent better compared to other compactors I’ve used. With the price of fuel these days, that’s a pretty important factor.”
The all new H series also provides its operators improved ergonomics and drivability.
“The operators love the machine,” he says. “They really can’t fault it, to be honest. “The controls and the visibility from the cabin are second to none. Basically, the only place you can’t see is through the floor.”
“That stability was a big part of the decision to go with the Tana too,” Martin says. “We’ve had it on some pretty weird angles, and it’s never been an issue. It’s very stable.”
The Tana H380 purchase was his first experience dealing with the supplier, but he expects it won’t be the last. “Whatever I’m buying, I’ve always really valued after-sale service,” he says. “And GCM has really impressed me.”
